It's been more than a year and a half now, and we all try to organise a "life after". Some wonderfull people are playing a crucial role in this: Paisley Park crew. I have yet to go and visit it, but from all account, the Museum is a beautiful thing, first in line to raise the purple flag.
Back then when I was working with them, I was in touch with some NPG Records and Paisley Park employees. I was always struck by the consistent level of professionalism and kindness.
Since Prince's passing, I hadn't had any contact though. Like many of us, I guess I needed to try and turn a page.
But, a few weeks ago, I was delighted to get an email from Paisley Park, and learn that (at least some of) those wonderful people were still there, working hard.
They wanted me to create an image for the one-year anniversary of the opening of the museum.
Following on last year's beautiful work by Martin Homent is not an easy challenge 😀. Schedule was tight was tight, too (and time zone difference didn't help).
After a few sketches and back and forth, I tried to get more in touch with the first portrait Prince bought. I liked the symbol of going back to the beginning, of transferring the spirit from one portrait to another. It was important for me to keep some continuity with what was done the previous year by Martin too: because it does continue.
The idea was even made better when they decided to revive this first portrait and turn it, alongside the new illustration, into merchandising.
One of my regrets was thinking this portrait would end up never being used. I'm thankful to the Paisley Park team for keeping it alive. I really love this portrait.
Check out the new merch. (here, here, here, and here) on the official store. It's sad they don't ship worldwide yet, I'm sure it will change eventually.
I would love to see official art prints of those illustrations too. Maybe one day.
Thank you again wonderful people of Paisley Park. Keep up the awesome work. I know we will talk again. 💜
